is something that I learned
learned to say in Taiwan like wo ting bu dong

Stepping outside of my dormitory, I
was feeling really happy around about the time of New Years Eve
I had just moved to Taiwan and was learning how to speak Chinese
and my friend had just taught me how to say something that was pretty easy

Xin Nian Kuai Le!
something that is easy enough, it
means happy new year in Mandarin and that's how this little story begins

Well now, fortunately, Chinese New Year lasts about two weeks,
and I got a lot of practice saying this phrase to everybody
I would say it to anybody whenever I had the opportunity
People even taught me how to say Happy New Year in another way

It's a blessing that sounds like this:
Nian nian you yu!
Something that you might have heard too
It means have more than everything you need year after year
(Though it also kind of sounds like “I hope you have a lot of fish”?!)

Stepping again outside of my dormitory high
above the rooftops, falling into some kind of Samsara,
Do you know the feeling of being stuck in a cycle of death and rebirth?
“Do you, Do you? Anyone? ...anyone? ...Bueller?
Or at least the feeling where you wonder what this life is really worth?

...and in that moment of total despair, I thought,
you know,
if you take the phrase Xin Nian Kuai Le
and switch the “nian” which means year
with “tian” that means day, well then....


Then you get...
Xin Tian Kuai Le!
Something that just came up
in my mind at that time when I just wanted to whine
Xin tian kuai le
Something that made me wake up,
It means have a happy new day and there maybe something new to embrace!

Ahhh ahhh ahhhhhhhhh (2x)

Did you know that every day is an opportunity
To imagine your infinite possibilities?!
So when you're sinking low, just remember this simple phrase
Even if it's the only thing, maybe it's the perfect reason to celebrate! (2x)
